What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that harnesses the power of acoustic waves to accelerate healing in chronic pain conditions.
How Shockwave Therapy Reignites Your Body’s Natural Healing Power
When you get injured, your body jumps into action—launching its own built-in healing mechanisms to repair damaged tissue, bone, and cells. It’s a pretty incredible process that usually does its job well.
But when pain becomes chronic, it means the body has stopped recognizing that area as injured. The healing process gets shut down, and no more relief is sent to the site. You're left stuck in a loop of ongoing discomfort, with your body essentially ignoring the issue.
That’s where shockwave therapy comes in.
This treatment uses targeted energy waves that penetrate deep into your soft tissues. These waves create what’s called “microtrauma”—a tiny, controlled disruption that acts like a new injury. This reactivates your body’s natural healing response, jumpstarting repair processes that had gone dormant.
But that’s not all.
The energy also stimulates your cells to release powerful biochemicals that amplify healing. These chemicals promote the growth of new microscopic blood vessels, improving circulation and helping your tissues recover faster and more completely.
In short, shockwave therapy helps your body remember how to heal—naturally.

What is this treatment like?
During the procedure, Dr. Don will apply a layer of ultrasound gel to the injured area to ensure proper transmission of the shockwaves. The applicator is then placed against the skin and moved slowly in a circular motion, delivering ballistic waves (compressed air impulses) directly to the affected tissues.
Most patients report only mild discomfort during the treatment. However, Dr. Don will make any necessary adjustments to keep you as comfortable as possible.
Afterward, it’s common to experience some soreness in the treated area for a day or two—similar to the feeling after a tough workout

FAQs
-
A sensation of pressure will be felt over the targeted area during therapy.
There may be a slight feeling of discomfort during the treatment, depending on the level of pain the patient is already experiencing in the area. However, most patients are able to tolerate this discomfort.
Additionally, the intensity of the treatment can be adjusted throughout the session.
-
A typical treatment takes anywhere from 4 to 8 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated.
-
You may feel improvement right away. Many patients experience pain reduction after their first treatment. This isn’t always the case, and it may take several treatments before you can tell a noticeable difference, but that doesn’t mean your condition isn’t improving. Each treatment is cumulative, and results are often felt after 3 or 4 sessions.
-
This depends on the condition being treated and the tissue response. The effect of the treatment is cumulative, so you will typically need more than one treatment.
Most indications require 3–5 treatments which are done 3–10 days apart, depending on the patient’s tolerance and their tissue response.
-
Yes. Shockwave therapy is often used with physical therapy, chiropractic care, massage, soft tissue mobilization, electrotherapy, and even following surgery. We recommend combining shockwave treatment with other healing modalities to increase effectiveness.
-
Most patients will experience an immediate pain relief following the treatment. However, within 2–4 hours after the treatment, they may experience some soreness in the treated area. This soreness has been reported as tolerable and not limiting.
-
Not necessarily. While combining Shockwave Therapy with Chiropractic care can be especially effective, it's not required. If you're dealing with a chronic issue and want to focus specifically on that, we offer an initial 20-minute evaluation that includes a Shockwave treatment. After that appointment, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.
